Invented by UOIT’s Provost Dr. Richard Marceau, the Kool Plate is made from high-grade aluminum; it is a simple, light weight & customizable alternative to many laptop cooling devices sold in retail stores and online. Similar products rely on USB powered fans for cooling, creating more noise and draining your laptops battery life. Kool Plate utilizes passive cooling and requires NO fans or USB connections, providing excellent cooling and protection. Alternative thermally conductive materials are possible (i.e. ABS plastic composites), and require further R&D to develop a composite material with properties comparable to aluminum. This product is easily customizable, allowing your artwork to be printed or engraved in a variety of ways.
Today’s laptop computers generate a significant amount of heat and electromagnetic radiation often in constant contact with users’ bodies. Efficient laptop cooling is often difficult when working away from desks and hard surfaces. For business travelers and children particularly, the need for a solid-state, passive cooling surface for laptops is a must. Other laptop cooling devices rely on USB powered fans which drain battery power, generate noise, and can potentially malfunction.
UOIT is seeking a licensing partner to manufacture and sell this technology. The Kool Plate can be made in a variety of materials; high-grade aluminum was initially chosen for its excellent heat conduction and ability to block electromagnetic radiation. Engraving, silk-screen printing and packaging make this product easily customizable for a variety of needs.
