Novel Material For Non-volatile Phase Change Memory Devices

McGill University

Phase change memory devices have been proposed as the next generation technology for non-volatile memory devices. Currently flash memory devices are the dominant technology. In flash memory, data is stored using an electrical charge. Whereas in phase change memory devices, data is stored as changes in the state of the material’s property. Currently phase change memory devices are based on chalcogenide alloys, using primarily; germanium, antimony and tellurium. A thin film deposition of a chalcogenide alloy is thermally activated resulting in a change to its atomic structure from a disordered state (amorphous) to a structured state (crystalline). The resulting state change leads a change to its electrical resistance to enable the encoding of the data. Our technology proposes using a Zirconium Copper (Zr-Cu) alloy, an amorphous metal material for phase change memory devices.

The Fourier Tag: A New Type of Progressively Degrading Synthetic Marker

McGill University

McGill University is seeking a partner to commercialize an innovative type of synthetic marker and fiducial target used to visually encode multi-bit information for subsequent automatic robust detection. In general, existing markers either work or don't, and making them very robust means a reduction in payload capacity. The Fourier Tag encodes information according to a priority scheme where the most critical information is associated with the low-frequency components of the markers, while the less critical information is encoded in the high-frequency bands of the markers. In optimal detection conditions, the Fourier Tag carries the same information payload as other types of synthetic markers. In adverse viewing conditions where high-frequency content is lost, most existing synthetic markers do not have the capacity to convey any information, while the Fourier Tag can still provide the highest priority information that is encoded in the low-frequency bands of the markers.

Unique and specific biomarkers for various infectious diseases

McGill University

A group of researchers has identified a number of unique, sensitive and specific serum biomarkers that can be used in various combinations to make a diagnosis for specific and individual infectious diseases (such as Chagas, Babesia, Leishmania, Dengue and others). These biomarkers return to or towards normal upon treatment allowing one to assess response to therapy (i.e.: test for cure). At the present time, there is no reliable serologic test for most of these infectious diseases and the diagnosis can only be made by invasive procedure (e.g. biopsy, aspiration, scraping) and either culture or molecular diagnostic (e.g. PCR). Except for Chagas, there is currently no FDA approved test available to screen the blood supply or for sero-epidemiologic studies. However, the new ELISA test manufactured by Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics and recently approved by the FDA to screen blood bank material for Chagas is not approved for diagnostic purpose.

Examples include painful diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, post-traumatic neuropathies, and the painful peripheral neuropathy caused by drugs used to treat cancer. Unlike other forms of chronic pain, neuropathic pain responds poorly or not at all to the standard analgesic drugs and thus it leads to great suffering, major disability and extensive health care utilization.

McGill University

Researchers at McGill have developed a sensor for detecting, in real-time, the erosion of a wear surface of a component, particularly a liner attached to the mill shell of a rotating grinding mill. The sensor consists of a conductive element embedded in the component, such as the liner of the mill. As the surface of the component wears to the height of the sensor, the circuit becomes exposed and subsequently damaged, changing the input of the sensor and indicating that the surface has worn to the height of the sensor. Installing multiple sensors throughout the component at various depths gives the state of wear or erosion of the component.

A new optical micro-structure which has highly dispersive properties and can thus be used to multiplex or demultiplex light for optical communications applications was invented at McGill University. It is a planar device and shares advantages of the so-called photonic bandgap ``superprism`` in that it is more compact than arrayed waveguide gratings and is also not limited by multiple diffraction orders. However, it is superior to currently disclosed superprism designs in that it is more amenable to available fabrication techniques and should display greatly reduced scattering loss.

Distributed Synchronous Backplane and Clocking Method

McGill University

This invention will provide a method of synchronizing distributed systems. Specifically, this invention targets the clocking structures required by spatially separated printed circuit boards in large computing or switching systems. As clock speeds and data transmission rates increase, and as the amount of traffic through networks increase, methods for synchronizing many parallel data paths will be crucial. In order to cut down on the latency and relatively low speeds of present day backplane and bus structures, the number of data paths must drastically increase and the rate at which the data moves must also increase.

Ultra High Data Transmission Rates for MIMO Systems

McGill University

This technology proposes a novel approach to achieve ultra high data transmission rates for Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) systems. The innovation lies in the proposed multi-dimensional signal detection technique that allows scalable, low-complexity and high rate retrieval of information from noisy multi-antenna signals. The approach comprises a soft decision detector and suitable iterative processing to cancel the effects of noise, interference and fading at the receiver. The detector at the receiver combines the antenna outputs to generate soft decisions on the transmitted symbols and these decisions are then used in a coded architecture based on channel codes and or an iterations processing stage. The resulting decoder is also scales linearly with the number of antennas. This allows deployment of high number antenna systems without a computational barrier.

A method and system for natural-quality coding of background acoustic noise in voice communication systems. A better representation of the excitation signal in a noise-synthesis model is achieved by classifying the type of acoustic environment noise. This information is used at the receive side to synthesize background noise that sounds similar to the background noise at the transmit side. The improvement in the quality of synthesized noise during speech gaps helps in preserving noise continuity between talk spurts and speech pauses, and enhances the perceived quality of a conversation.
